Special Needs Coaching Programme
Opening up again during the pandemic it was essential that all sectors of the community were given vital access to sport to boost health and wellbeing. Totnes Community Tennis Club, in discussions with local special needs establishments – Bidwell Brook School and Lifeworks – realised that they could make a difference and for several months have been working really hard to bring tennis to everyone.
Tonia Gooderham, the club LTA coach and keen volunteers from our membership underwent specialist coaching from tennis charity, Bright Ideas For Tennis, in order to bring the joys of tennis to the special needs community.
These fun tennis activity sessions are designed for pupils with learning, sensory and physical disabilities. Some will have severe problems, but tennis is a sport that anyone can play. It can be adapted for any level of ability, impairments or disability.
The children are getting such a lot out of working with a new set of people and developing new skills, that they will be able to use in other contexts.

Each session is expertly and sensitively led by the club’s LTA coach Tonia Gooderham. The fact that the students have all responded so well to the sessions and have improved so much over the few weeks is a testament to Tonia’s skill and dedication.
